I live among the redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where I spend my time reading, writing, tending bees, gardening, chopping firewood, and swimming. Most days I write slowly and cook simply. When I’m not working, I hike, play soccer, read with my kids, noodle on the guitar, or watch TV with my wife. I believe that philosophy has something to do with how we live in time—not just what we think, but how we orient ourselves to the world and to each other.

I joined San José State University in 2018 as the Associate Dean of Research and Faculty Success for the College of Humanities and the Arts. I served in that role until January 2023, when I retreated to the faculty as Professor of Philosophy. Before coming to SJSU, I served as an Associate Dean at National University for two years. Before that, I taught philosophy for nine years at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. My PhD is from Vanderbilt University, and while I was working on that degree, I also taught as an adjunct philosophy instructor at Western Kentucky University. My undergraduate degree is in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin.
